Chinese New Year will be celebrated this February on the 16th Unlike the New Year we celebrate in the UK; the date of Chinese New Year differs from year to year. Chinese New Year is known as the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival and the meaning of the festival is for families to come together and wish each other peace and prosperity. There is keen interest every year to see what animal it is. This year is the year of the dog.


Dog Tricks:

Equipment needed: None

o   Start by asking the group to move around the room like a dog, this can be any way they like

o   Choose 3 dog tricks from the list below (make up your own too)

o   Name them 1-3 for example:

o   1= Roll over

o   2=Chase your tail

o   3=Howl at the moon

o   As the group are moving around the room shout out number 1,2 or 3 the group do the dog trick linked to the number

o   Keep changing the way they move around the room

o   E.G. taking your dog for a run/walking the dog/jumping over hurdles

  • Roll over
  • Play dead
  • Chase your tail
  • Bark like a Chihuahua
  • Howl at the moon
  • Sniff around for your bone
  • Wag your tongue

Give a dog a bone:

Equipment needed: Post it notes  

o   Half the group are dogs

o   The other half are the dog owners

o   All the dog owners who want to ‘give a dog a bone’

o   The dog owners have 5 post it notes each (The post it notes are the bones, ask the group to draw a bone on them if you like!)

o   Their aim is to stick as many of the post it notes (bones) on the dogs as they can in 30 seconds

o   When the time is up count how many post it notes the dog have on them

o   Then swap over to let the dogs be owners and play again
